Borrowing Printed Books

Borrowing books for distant users is done by filling in the online Borrowing Request FormOn the premises of the Library students can borrow books by showing their academic identification card and external users by showing their Library card respectively.

Before making the online request it’s necessary to search for the material in the Online Public Access Catalogue of the Library in order to check its availability. For more information please refer to the Guide for Searching in the Main Catalogue..

n case you wish to place a hold on an item which is borrowed, you must fill in the online Request for Placing a Hold form.

The borrower bears the cost of both the shipment and the return of the material. The shipment is done either by any private courier company of the borrower's choice, or by the courier service of the Hellenic Post Office. When returning the material to the Library one should use either the Hellenic Post Office (the “Registered Post” service must be used) or any private courier companies. In case of loss or damage of the books, the borrower must replace them. In case the borrower does not receive the package and the latter is returned to the Library, all shipping expenses from and to the Library shall be covered by the borrower.

LOW COST SHIPMENTThe Hellenic Open University (HOU) Library has signed up an agreement with the GENIKI TACHIDROMIKI courier company and has secured for its users within Greece lower fees for its services. Please refer to the table below. The prices mentioned include consortium the shipment and the return of the books. The cost of the parcel is determined by its weight. Please note that when returning the books to the Library you must use the “reverse charge” service.

They retain the right to borrow books for three (3) years from the date of their registration in the Alumni Network. At the end of this period, they can join the category of external users

  1. Borrowing from a distance: when borrowing for the first time send a photocopy of your I.D. Card and fill in the Borrowing Request FormFrom that point onwards just fill in the Borrowing Request Form every time you wish to borrow. Please note that you are not allowed to place a hold on items.
  2. Borrowing on the premises of the Library: you must apply for a Library Card by filling in an application form and attach a photocopy of your I.D. card and a passport size photograph.

You can borrow either on the premises of the Library, by showing your university identification student card or by sending a photocopy of your university identification student card and filling in an online Borrowing Request Form . You cannot place holds on items.

You can borrow on the premises of the Library all printed books by showing your university identification student card. You can place a hold on items.

You have equal borrowing rights with HOU students for a period of 12 months after your graduation. From that point onwards you have the borrowing rights of external users.

Printed materials not borrowed: periodicals and informational materials (eg dictionaries, encyclopedias).

All users are entitled to one renewal, provided that it has not been booked by another user.
